Powerful winds that raged throughout the Southland last night continued Thursday morning, knocking down a tree that damaged several Boyle Heights homes.
KTLA reports the windstorm caused a large eucalyptus tree to fall at about 5 a.m., collapsing one roof and damaging at least two other homes near Boulder and Mott Streets.
The most affected house suffered serious damage to its interior, however the 85-year-old man that lived there did not suffer any injuries. The home was blocked by yellow caution tape after building inspectors deemed it unsafe to live in.
In a separate report, a tree knocked over a traffic light post on the corner of Cesar Chavez Avenue and Echandia Street near White Memorial Hospital, obstructing traffic and causing a back up in a highly trafficked area. As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, crews were still cleaning up the mess but Cesar Chavez remained closed from Boyle Avenue to Warren Street.
As of 3:00 p.m. Thursday, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power reported 130,000 customers were without power, 3,800 of them in Boyle Heights.
But the storm is not over. According to the National Weather Service, strong winds are expected Thursday evening into Friday, producing gusts of 60 to 80 mph.
