We’ve been covering the pro-Palestinian student encampment at Cal State Los Angeles since it started. Earlier this week, police in riot gear swarmed the campus, driving protesters away from the scene. Clean-up crews quickly went to work on dismantling the encampment. This comes less than a week after 50 protestors breached and barricaded themselves inside the Student Services building with university staffers inside, closing off entrances with tables and umbrellas to limit access. As part of our Pride month coverage, we’re featuring queer couples who are making a difference on the Eastside in their own unique ways – all while being unapologetically in love. Our reporter Carmen González is kicking off the series with a Q&A on Sky Gaven and Nancy “Uninanti” Ventura, the founders of Gaventura Capital. The business is based in Boyle Heights and aims to end generational poverty by offering financial literacy services. You can read the story here.
This weekend was the fourth annual Orgullo Fest in Boyle Heights. The neighborhood Pride celebration brought a colorful procession, performances and more to 1st Street. Check out the photos and learn about the event’s history in this story by reporter Ricky Rodas.

Saturday, June 22
Over in City Terrace at Abe’s Market (4004 City Terrace Drive), a collective of community organizations are coming together to bring residents “Good Mischief,” a day full of environmental education and justice, along with fun activities. The event will include a scent workshop, plant exchange and propagation demo, food, giant pollution piñatas and much more to do from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can RSVP for the free event online.
Latinx with Plants (2208 Cesar E. Chavez Avenue) is hosting a plant and fruit swap to give local residents a chance to trade plants, cuttings, fruit and more with fellow neighbors, all while building community. There’ll be refreshments for sale, and a small number of nursery pots will be up for grabs while supplies last. You can RSVP for the free event online.
Re/Arte Centro Literário (2123 Cesar E. Chavez Avenue) is hosting a fundraiser with La Raza Unida to help financially support the local bookstore. There will be food and refreshments at the event, which runs from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes (501 N. Main Avenue) is hosting a free screening of Gaytino! Made in America. A 90-minute performance traveling through decades of Mexican-American history and its intersection with the gay experience, the film is a one-of-kind watch that’s sure to touch your soul. The screening starts at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A discussion.
It’s that time of the year for the neighbor’s annual concert and fireworks show! Head to Hollenbeck Park (415 S. St. Louis Street) for food, resources, performances, activities and more starting at 4 p.m., with the fireworks show set to take place at 8 p.m.
Sunday, June 23
You know The Paramount (2708 Cesar E. Chavez) has you covered with fun nights out on Cesar Chavez, and this weekend’s no different. The Eastside venue is hosting a showcase of the Next World Collective with performances by Aleyna Moon, Hohyun, Brynne and Mica Yui. It’s a great way to support young emerging artists, all for $20. You can buy a ticket for the all-ages show online. Doors are set to open at 7 p.m.
In South Boyle Heights, Don Quixote (2811 E. Olympic Boulevard) is hosting a wrestling show with a goth twist. Sunday’s Lucha Goth House is going to be full of live music, wrestling matches, a variety show, goth merch vendors and more. Catch the meet-and-greet for the 18 and over event at 3 p.m., with the variety show set to start at 5 p.m. You can grab a ticket for about $30 online.
