Los Angeles County residents will have to endure a few more days of blistering heat after a weekend of record-setting temperatures.

The National Weather Service Los Angeles reported the severe temperatures will likely stick around through most of the week, bringing high risk for heat-related illnesses. Those most vulnerable include pregnant women, newborns, children, elderly folks and those with chronic illness. NWS officials recommend the following to stay cool during the brutal heat wave.

  • Use air conditioners, fans and stay in the shade when possible
  • Drink plenty of water, even when not thirsty
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat of the day
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
  • Avoid leaving people or pets alone in a closed car

Areas of Los Angeles County, including the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, are under excessive heat warnings through Thursday, and could see highs in the triple digits. Downtown L.A. is expected to peak in the low 90s Wednesday and cool into the weekend.

Los Angeles is extending the availability of dedicated cooling centers through Thursday, as temperatures throughout the area remain high.

The following places on the Eastside have been designated as cooling centers:

  • Benjamin Franklin Branch Library
  • Robert Louis Stevenson Branch
  • Malabar Branch Library
  • L.A. County Library – East L.A.
  • Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory
  • East Los Angeles Service Center
  • Centro Maravilla Service Center
  • Salazar Park
  • City Terrace Park
