With less than three months before the November election, both campaigns vying for Council District 14 seat have been hard at work to get local residents ready to vote.

According to campaign finance totals from the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission, as of June 30, CD 14 Councilmember Kevin de León has raised $292,461, more than double the $123,808 that tenant rights attorney Ysabel Jurado has raised.

David Meraz, De León’s campaign manager, says it’s a clear indication that voters are seeing the work the Councilmember has put into CD 14 neighborhoods over the past four years.

“We feel that we’re in a very strong position for the upcoming election because of the work De León has been putting in,” said Meraz. “Council District 14 is a very diverse community, with a number of neighborhoods that experience real life challenges. De León has been right there by them, being a city leader who has actually made a difference.”

Naomi Villagomez Roochnik, Jurado’s campaign manager, says she’s not deterred by the gap in fundraising, pointing out that they received over 10 times as many donations under $100 as compared to De León.

“We got outraised this time. We’re still going to come in first place,” said Roochnik. “Our money was raised by actually talking with the residents of this district who want meaningful, material change in this community.”

In initial ballot counts after the primary election, De León had an early lead, with Jurado ultimately pulling ahead with a total of 8,618 votes, to De León’s 8,220 votes. In the primary election, De León also outraised Jurado,  $358,649 to her $250,068.
