Crystal Villareal, Student Journalism Mentor
My background: My background: I grew up on the southside of Atlanta and moved to Los Angeles to take an editor role at the Los Angeles Times, covering opinion. I was also a part of the team that helped launch the De Los vertical. Before that, I worked as a lead reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and as a managing editor for a business trade publication. I am also a young adult author and children’s television writer and have written for shows on PBS Kids and Nickelodeon.
What I do: I work as an audience editor and reporter for Capital & Main. At The LA Local, I support journalism students in Boyle Heights and Inglewood with reporting, writing, and editing. I help encourage them to have the confidence they need to go out into their communities and cover the issues that matter most to them.
Why LA: For me, LA makes the most sense. It’s a place to build community, pursue my writing and where I can be a part of something bigger than myself. I love how vibrant and free this city is, and I plan on staying for as long as I can.
