Senior My’Atri Goodwin averaged 8.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game for the Washington Prep Generals girls’ basketball team this season. She helped the team win the CIF City Section Division III championship.
In their title match against Gardena, Goodwin made 12 rebounds.
“I don’t remember scoring that game,” she said. “But I was looking at the film again and … I’m actually assisting. I’m running the ball up the court. I’m making good passes, I’m rebounding the ball.”
During her time at Washington Prep, Goodwin competed in flag football, volleyball, and track and field.
She began playing basketball competitively in the 10th grade. Goodwin did not want to commit to the rigors of being a student-athlete in the ninth grade.
Goodwin was on girls’ basketball rosters that had deep runs in the playoffs but were unable to secure a championship until the 2025-2026 season.
“It was like if I quit now, then what am I doing? I’m just wasting my time,” she said. “I decided to continue to play because I’m going to get that ring. I’m dedicating it to myself.”
During that time, her message to her teammates was to never give up.
“I know it really is a love-hate relationship, you have to want to do something to be good at it,” Goodwin said. “I was telling them to be confident, just go out there and play your game.”
Goodwin knows that academics come first; she works to keep her GPA above a 3.0.
“If you can show that you can do it inside the classroom, then you can show that you can do it on the field and the basketball court,” she said. “I’m taking AP African American Studies … I love learning about the history.”
Along with maintaining her school work and athleticism, Goodwin works at a beauty supply store. The job allowed her to improve her networking skills.
“I love interacting with people, I love talking to people,” Goodwin said. “Talking to people is good because it helped me build social and it expands your palette of people.”
Goodwin aspires to study business management, become a business owner and get into real estate. She also has plans to become a social worker.
“I feel like if I can buy and sell these homes, then I can also put people in these homes that I have bought,” Goodwin said. “Help them out along the way.”
