Kassandra López, Community Engagement Intern
My background: I was born in Bellflower and raised in South Central LA, moving from school to school. I recently graduated with highest honors from Cerritos College, earning my Associate’s Degree in Journalism and serving as the News Editor for Talon Marks. During my time there, I discovered my true calling in storytelling in many fields of journalism. This efforts-driven journey recently earned me a first-place award at the 2026 Journalism Association of Community Colleges Publication Awards. I am now continuing my academic path as a dedicated student at Cal State Long Beach while also coaching youth soccer for the LA Galaxy.
Why LA: Growing up in South Central, I have seen how mainstream media misses the real picture of our neighborhoods. I am here to find the angle everyone else skips and tell the story behind the story, making sure our newsrooms actually reflect the communities they cover.
