Culver City senior William Fourte is a dual-sport athlete, competing in football and basketball. In football, he made contributions in all three phases in the eight games that he played this season.
Fourte had the most impact on offense with 32 catches for 377 yards with four touchdowns. This past season, football helped him become a more vocal leader as a senior captain.
“I’m the youngest out of my brothers, so I’m typically not supposed to be a leader,” Fourte said. “I was pushed into the leadership roles when I wasn’t able to play with them, because I have the experience of playing up, of playing different players.”
A proud moment for him is being called to compete in varsity as a freshman.
“At first, I was like, Oh, they’re moving really fast, they’re really tall, they’re really physical,” Fourte said. “But I just thought about it. I’ve been playing against fast, tall physical [opponents] my entire life.”
As a freshman, the Centaurs boy’s basketball team was led by Showtime Laker Michael Cooper. From Cooper, Fourte learned the importance of keeping his composure.
“Always be professional, because you never know who’s watching,” Fourte said. “That’s something that he’s told me.”
Outside of going to practice, Fourte exercises with his father who pushed him to be a better athlete.
“In quarantine, my dad would have me waking up at three, 3:30, and we’d be at the park at three till the (sun) came up, just dribbling, shooting,” Fourte said. “I’m very, grateful that he did that, because I would not have done that myself.”
For Fourte, being a student athlete is an exclusive privilege. Fourte wants to take advantage of it all.
“I get to play football and basketball and maybe track, maybe baseball,” Fourte said. “I get that opportunity to do that. There’s very little people who get to do that, get to experience the leadership roles that I’m put in to.”
Outside of academics and athletics, Fourte works with youth at the Brotherhood Crusade. He also does volunteer work with the Kappa League.
“[At] Christmas time I go and I pass out gifts to people who are not as fortunate as me,” Fourte said. “I want to be a good person, pretty much. I want to have a good personality. I want to be approachable.”
In the future, Fourte wants to compete in either basketball or football on the next level. He was inspired by his mom to graduate from college.
“I want to be a collegiate athlete,” Fourte said. “I want to get a degree, because I’ve seen my mom, she has a bachelor’s degree.”
