Andrew Lopez, Student Journalism Mentor
My background: I come to The LA Local with experience as a community reporter with Boyle Heights Beat and educator. I have roots all over the Eastside and cherish memories spent in East LA, the San Gabriel Valley and my hometown, Whittier. I earned a Masters of Journalism from the University of California Berkeley in 2023 and specialize in audio production and photojournalism.
What I do: Every week I support students across two of our Youth Journalism cohorts in conducting interviews, filming for short-form video content and capture moments on the field with different camera systems. I am also a regular contributor to The LA Local as a freelance journalist and frequently cover arts and culture, local government and the local economy.
Why LA: LA is my home. I understand the nuances, history and people of the Eastside and my experience informs my reporting and dedication to the countless communities that raised me.
