Carol Martinez, Youth Journalism Mentor
My background: I got my start in journalism at seventeen years old when I joined the Boyle Heights Beat newsroom as a youth reporter. After graduating with my B.A. in English from UCLA, I returned to my Boyle Heights community as a volunteer for our youth reporter programming, assisting a cohort of high school students who decided they wanted to tell the stories of their neighborhood. Throughout my time in the newsroom, I jumped back into community reporting, and now I contribute as a freelance reporter for the Boyle Heights Beat.
What I do: I work with our youth reporters in Boyle Heights and Koreatown as a mentor, helping students navigate writing articles for the first time and guiding them through the ever-changing world of journalism.
Why LA? I was born and raised here. The love I have for this city is beyond measure. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to work in and for the community that raised me.
