Jeremiah Dobruck, Senior Editor, Long Beach Post
My background: I’ve lived and breathed local news since my first taste of journalism at my community college newspaper. I met my wife in that newsroom, and it launched me on to internships and entry-level jobs at community newspapers in my hometown of Torrance. Since then, I’ve worked in all kinds of newsrooms, and the ones that thrived treated their work with humility and their audience with respect.
What I do: I’ve spent most of my career — including the last 10 years in Long Beach — writing and reporting stories that reveal injustices and ask difficult questions of people in power. In my current role as executive editor of the Long Beach Post, I mentor reporters and teach them the skills they need to do the same. I guide and edit our coverage at the Post, making sure we always have our community’s back.
Why Long Beach: Nowhere has quite the same sense of place, pride and diversity as Long Beach. It’s a city that forces you to think outside yourself, consider new perspectives and inspires you to do your best work. It’s been a special place for me ever since hearing my grandpa’s stories about working at the Naval shipyard and moving the Spruce Goose.
