Kate Raphael, Reporter, Long Beach Post

My background: I’ve lived in Long Beach only a few months, but I’m already finding a home here that has been really welcoming. Originally from Indiana, I completed my graduate work in journalism at UC Berkeley, then worked on several in-depth stories focused on health and child welfare. I came to the Post through the California Local News Fellowship, which is a great program that allows small local outlets to gain more coverage.

What I do: I write about education for the Post, a broad subject that includes everything from budgets to celebrating student achievements. I routinely meet with parents, youth, advocates, administrators and others to find stories that matter to readers. I believe strongly in coverage that is fair, nuanced, timely and unique.

Why Long Beach: Reporting on education in Long Beach, home to one of the largest school districts in California, lets me dig into issues affecting the city’s youngest residents and elevate their voices. This vibrant, diverse city deserves rigorous reporting on one of its largest sectors — education — and I am committed to covering this beat with persistence, tenacity and care.
