Melissa Evans, Managing Director, Long Beach

My background: I’ve been devoted to the profession of local news since I was 19 and landed a dream job covering high school sports for my hometown paper. Journalism is personal for me. I know the power that comes from asking questions persistently, listening intently and delivering facts accurately. It’s also a special thing to do this in Long Beach, my home for 20 years. I also teach journalism at Cal State Long Beach,  a part-time role that has given me hope for the future of local news.

What I do: I oversee operations at the Post and Business Journal, focusing on building and strengthening our ties with neighborhoods, businesses and leaders. For the last two years, I have focused on transitioning the Post and Business Journal from a for-profit business model to an independently-run community newsroom.

Why Long Beach: I’ve lived in Long Beach longer than anywhere else. Long Beach is proud of its resilience and protective of its identity. The city also has these unique pockets of community and culture. I love the murals on parking garages and spots. This is also a place where if you’re in need of company, you can join a board game at a coffee shop, visit the swim hole at Bay Shore (only in summer), volunteer and more.
