June is here! To be perfectly queer, Pride Month is officially underway in Los Angeles!

While big events like Weho Pride, the LA Pride Parade and the Outloud Music Festival get a lot of attention, smaller LGBTQIA+ community groups are just as important. This guide highlights local hangouts, block parties, film screenings, comic conventions and outdoor events you might want to check out.

Salvies Who Lunch is starting off Pride’s first week with their fourth annual “Joteria!” event. It will be held at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. Founder and CEO Cynthia Gonzalez started Salvies Who Lunch in 2018 as the first all-woman, queer-led nonprofit focused on Salvadorian and Central American culture.

Salvies Who Lunch has organized more than 50 events, including Pupusas Fest. Ticket and merchandise sales, along with partnerships and local volunteers, have helped the organization grow. They also started the Bichitos Club y Bichitas Club, a youth program that teaches K-12 students about their Central American roots through art, food, culture and music.

Over the past four years, Joteria has featured live drag shows, games, arts and crafts, dance classes, community resources, food vendors and queer-owned businesses.

“One of the things that we wanted from day one was that we didn’t want it to be just another pride celebration with adult partying and drinking. We wanted a family vibe and for our queer elders to come out,” Gonzalez told The LA Local.

This year, Gonzalez’s team chose the theme “el amor es resistance” or “love is resistance,” to honor all queer people who feel under attack, including the trans community, drag queens reading to children and those affected by the banning of LGBTQIA+ themed books. “That’s our way of bringing that unity to everyone at our event, not just this event, but all of them,” Gonzalez said.

She also added that love is part of it. “Resisting is existing in your own skin and showing that loving who you want to love very openly. That’s a way of also resisting.”

  • A performer wearing a royal blue suit embroidered with colorful flowers sings into a microphone while raising one arm toward the camera. Multicolored canopy panels are visible overhead.
  • Two performers stand on an outdoor stage. One plays an electric cello with dreadlocks and blue eye makeup; the other, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and layered necklaces, plays a handheld electronic instrument. A floral wall and framed portrait displays are visible behind them.
  • A shopper holds up a canvas tote bag bearing the Oxmo Body Care logo while speaking with a vendor across a table filled with soaps, lotions, and body care products. A rainbow flag and other vendor booths are visible in the background.
  • A performer in bold stage makeup and a white folklórico dress with rainbow-colored stripes spins on an outdoor stage. A tall column of rainbow balloons stands to the left.
  • Three smiling people pose behind a table draped with a Mi Centro banner and covered in colorful pride materials. A large rainbow flag and a progress pride flag hang in the background against a blue decorative wall.

The Joteria event will take place on Saturday, June 6, from 2 to 7 p.m. It will feature local queer artists, a comedy skit, a mariachi singer, a tattoo station by Puchica Studio and drinks from Boomtown Brewery.
