Hot fudge sundae from Bob’s Freeze

I’ve been going to Bob’s Freeze since I was a kid and every visit feels like a nostalgic trip down memory lane. My go-to order has always been the hot fudge sundae, which is served with vanilla soft serve, their signature hot fudge, whipped cream, peanuts (a must!), and a maraschino cherry on top. It looks huge when you first get it but I personally recommend not sharing because you will finish it before the fudge melts the soft serve. This spot is extra special because my dad used to take my mom here when they were first dating, so now it holds a place in my family’s heart. Insider tip: bring cash, as this is a cash-only establishment and if you’re feeling bold, try the suicide slush float.

Tejuino Fresco Estilo Guadalajara
Growing up in Huntington Park, I would often visit Sears in Boyle Heights with my family. I loved going because I knew that afterwards we would stop by Tejuino Fresco Estilo Guadalajara to buy some fresh tejuino, a cold fermented drink made from corn.
My family is from Guadalajara and this was our signature drink. Sometimes my tia would take the 251 stop in front of Sears to buy the tejuino from the señora at the stand and bring some back home. At home, we would add more sea salt and it was always so refreshing, especially on a hot day.

Aguachiles at Correas Mariscos & Cocina

For me, summer means mariscos, and that often means taking a short walk over to the USC Health Sciences Campus for what I consider some of the best mariscos in L.A. On a hot weekend like this, I like to fight fire with fire with a cup of aguachiles. The cool but spicy combo is a perfect bite for a summer weekend afternoon. When I’m feeling extra hungry, I’ll go for their shrimp po-boy sandwich on a soft bun. Pair whatever you get with a cold beer and their house-made michelada mix. No matter what you order, you really can’t go wrong at Correa’s.

Chamango at Raspados Don Manuel #2

When I want a cool and refreshing treat, I go to Raspados Don Manuel, right across from Evergreen Park. It always feels great to pick up their chamango, a cup full of frozen mango blend topped with fresh fruit, spicy chamoy and tangy Tajin. I have fond memories of visiting the shop after playing at the park with my father. For this reason, the store will always have a place in my heart, plus they have a diverse selection. Insider tip: always make conversation — the people are great and you never know when some extra treats may slip in.

Cold brew from Picaresca

I take my caffeine intake very seriously, hot or cold. That’s why on hot days like these, a black cold brew from Picaresca is a must. Their cold brew hits all my requirements: smooth, semi-mid acidity, perfect coffee-to-water ratio, and the price. Want to conquer the day? I recommend pairing it with a plain croissant.

Smoothie from J & F Ice Cream

I was never a smoothie-type of person until I tried J&F’s. I was at the veterinary across the street last summer, and while waiting for my pup, I walked into J&F and ordered a strawberry and pineapple smoothie. Since then. I’ve been going there weekly or sometimes twice a week. For $7 dollars, you get a 16-oz smoothie with a mix of up to two fruits. Feeling hungry? Try their torta de asada.
