Food plays a central role for those who celebrate Thanksgiving, and while there’s not many grocery stores in Boyle Heights, some in the neighborhood are offering great deals for those looking to get their holiday fixings. 

Northgate Market (425 S. Soto St.)

The local grocery store of choice for many, this Soto St. staple has a 6-8 person dinner package which includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and pan de elote for $89.99. You can also grab individual Thanksgiving sides from home-style turkey stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy or mac and cheese for $7.99 a pound.

An individual spiral ham is $59.99 with a Dubuque ham at $24.99. If you’re looking for a different kind of meal, you can also grab a 6-8 person tamale package with champurrado, salsa, crema and of course tamales for $79.99. You can even find all you need to make a warm bowl of pozole. They’ve  got buñuelos, conchas and other treats for those with a sweet tooth.  A list of all specials this week can be found here

The store’s hours this holiday are:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 27: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 28: 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 29: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Smart & Final (2308 E. 4th St.)

Down on 4th Street is the neighborhood’s Smart & Final. Here you’ll find turkeys as cheap as 57 cents a pound, limited to 1 per person while supplies last. There’s also spiral hams at $2.49 a pound and family favorite cordonices for $12.99 for a pack of four.

A variety of pies are available for $5.99-9.99 a pop. Best known for being a bulk item store, it’s also the perfect spot to pick up cups, plates, trays and utensils as well as 49 cent canned vegetables and $2.99 packs of tortillas. You can also grab 10 pounds of potatoes for $1.99. A list of all specials this week can be found here

The store’s hours on Thanksgiving day are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Food 4 Less (2750 E. 1st St.)

Food 4 Less has a variety of Kroger, Butterball and Honeysuckle turkeys at great prices for those shopping at the last minute, with its Boyle Heights location open 6 a.m. until 8 p.m on Thursday. You can  find all kinds of pre-packaged and fresh cakes ranging from $6.99 to $20. And yes, you can   grab a 6-pack of pre-made pork, chicken and cheese tamales for $7.99, or the corn husks, meat, cheese and masa needed to make your own.
