The Los Angeles-based band La Santa Cecilia will headline the 6th annual Target Feria de la Familia at Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Park this Sunday, July 24.

Our youth reporter, Diana Arellano, featured the band in the June edition of Boyle Heights Beat/El Pulso de Boyle Heights (read story here) describing their sound as a “unique mixture of traditional Mexican ballads, jazz, rumba and even Jewish klezmer music.”

La Santa Cecilia, named after the Mexican patron saint of musicians, came together in 2007 and quickly made a name for themselves, opening for Ozomatli in 2010 and performing at major music festivals such as South By South West. Their latest album, “Noche y Citas,” was released last year under Grammy Award-winning producer Sebastian Krys’ new label Rebeleon.

The Target Feria de la Familia is a free family event with dance, art activities, storytelling, food, theatre and more. Other musical performances include Chicano Batman, Ozomatli’s Raul Pacheco & The Immaculate Conception and Plaza’s award-winning youth and adult folklórico dancers and mariachis.

My background: I was born in Mexico and raised in Boyle Heights, where I got my start in journalism by launching a community blog. Most recently, I worked at the Los Angeles Times and have spent most of my career covering local news in LA, with a focus on community-centered stories, Latino communities and mentoring emerging writers.

What I do: I lead coverage of Boyle Heights and East LA across all platforms to inform, connect and uplift our community. I spend my days listening, planning, editing and coordinating to make sure our stories reflect the community fairly, while supporting and mentoring my team of reporters and freelancers so they can grow along the way.

Why LA?: It’s home. It’s the sounds of Spanglish and other languages, the smell of tacos and kimchi, the way street art tells stories and how, even though I hate traffic, I love how the freeways can take me to the beach or the mountains on a whim.

The best way to contact me: My email is jessica.perez@boyleheightsbeat.org.
