Thousands of families, students and educators marked the first day of school at the Los Angeles Unified School District on Thursday with a little extra support.
At Lorena Street Elementary, educators took part in an “Adopt A School” event, a back-to-school initiative where community members, parents, and teachers gather at campus entrances to greet students with signs of encouragement, aiming to establish a welcoming and safe environment amid immigration enforcement fears.
Third-grade teacher Ada Payam was outside Lorena Street Elementary on Thursday morning, holding signs that read “Todos Son Bienvenidos Aquí.”
“We want our children to succeed and tell the families that we are here for them,” said Payam, who attended Lorena as a child.
“I’m here in my community to give back as a teacher,” Payan said. “Lorena was home, and still is home.”
For parent Alicia Uvera, the show of support gave her a sense of security.
“The teachers and staff are here for the community, and supporting the parents, ensuring their children come to school without being scared,” Uvera said.
The mother, who spoke after dropping off her daughter, said her biggest concern was having her child “see people being taken” during immigration enforcement operations.
Daniela Fabian, another parent at Lorena, said being involved and familiarizing herself with teachers and other student parents is key to building community.
“With everything that’s been happening, we’re just a little concerned and wondering if there are enough measures to keep [students] them safe,” Fabian said.
In response to growing concerns, LAUSD released a Family Preparedness Care Package that provides information for free legal resources and guides, and is also offering new transportation options.
Community groups like Unión del Barrio and the Association of Raza Educators have also launched a series of trainings on how to protect students, faculty, staff and families from immigration enforcement actions.
In addition to the community and districtwide support, Alfredo Rosales said his role as a father is essential to his child’s success.
“Parents being attentive to kids during moments like their first day gives them a blanket of security for them to feel comfortable on their own,” Rosales said.
