Election Day may be over, but results are still coming in. Here’s who was on the ballot to represent Boyle Heights and the Eastside and where those races stand as ballots continue to be counted.


María Elena Durazo declares victory in
LA County Supervisorial District 1

State Sen. María Elena Durazo declared victory late Tuesday in the race to represent nearly 2 million residents across Los Angeles County in areas including unincorporated East LA and the San Gabriel Valley. 

If backed by official results, Durazo will succeed Hilda Solis in representing District 1 on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Solis was first elected in 2014 and is set to term out this year. 

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, results from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk showed Durazo with 56.55% of the vote, ahead of runner-up Elaine Alaniz, who had 15.45%. Three other candidates trailed behind.

The five county supervisors manage an annual budget of nearly $50 billion and together represent more than 10 million people across LA County. The supervisors determine countywide policy for jails and juvenile halls, foster care and the LA County Sheriff’s Department. 

Durazo was a prominent labor leader before she was first elected to the California State Senate in 2018.

Leading up to the election, Durazo told LAist that, if elected, she would support raising wages and criticized the county’s response to homelessness, calling it a “massive collective failure.” Durazo also said she would “oppose any new tax breaks, tax incentives, tax subsidies or any other fancier ways of giving away money to people who don’t need it.”

Incumbent Rocio Rivas takes large lead in LAUSD District 2 contest

Incumbent Rocío Rivas had held a strong lead in the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education District 2 race.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Rivas had 61% of the vote, with 35,274 votes counted. Challenger Raquel Zamora trailed with about 39%, or 22,851 votes.

If Rivas remains above 50% as more ballots are counted, she would be on track to avoid a November runoff and win another term.

District 2 includes nearly 300 schools in Boyle Heights, East LA, Highland Park, Echo Park and other Eastside neighborhoods.

Rocio Rivas is the incumbent vice president of the LAUSD Board of Education and the parent of a district student. Raquel Zamora is a Boyle Heights native is an LAUSD pupil services and attendance counselor, and has spent two decades with the district.

LAUSD board members will be tasked with balancing the district’s budget in the wake of hundreds of job cuts, bolstering student enrollment with fewer immigrant students attending LA schools, and making decisions over school safety and academic improvement. 


Jessica Caloza, Andrea Lee Anderson head to runoff in Assembly District 52 race

In Assembly District 52, incumbent Jessica Caloza advanced to the November election alongside Republican Andrea Lee Anderson, according to the Associated Press. Because they were the only two candidates in the race, both move on under California’s top-two primary system.

Caloza has represented the 52nd district since 2024, after defeating fellow Democrat Franky Carrillo.

State Assembly District 52 spans most of East Los Angeles and Glendale, as well as the neighborhoods of El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, Atwater Village, Silver Lake and Mount Washington.


Mark Gonzalez reelected unopposed in Assembly District 54

California State Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez, who represents the 54th District, ran unopposed and will return to office for another term. Gonzalez has represented the district since 2024, when he defeated fellow Democrat John Yi.

State Assembly District 54 encompasses the neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, part of downtown, Westlake, Koreatown, Pico-Union, and Chinatown. The District’s boundaries also include the cities of Vernon, Montebello and Commerce.


Sara Hernandez set to advance in 26th State Senate District race

Sara Hernandez will advance to a runoff in the crowded race for the 26th State Senate District, according to Associated Press results, while the second runoff spot remains too close to call.

The latest results from the Associated Press showed Hernandez with 31.7% or 32,474 of the votes. Sarah Rascón was in second place with 16.4%, or 16,772 votes, followed by Wendy Carrillo with 13.6%, or 13,940 votes. Under California’s top-two primary system, the top two candidates will move on to the general election on Nov. 3.

The race is for the seat currently held by Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, who opted not to seek reelection and instead run for the LA County Board of Supervisors.

Jimmy Gomez and Angela Gonzales-Torres head to runoff in 34th Congressional District race

Rep. Jimmy Gomez and Angela Gonzales-Torres, both Democrats, secured the top two spots and advanced to the runoff in the 34th Congressional District race.

The latest results from the Associated Press showed Gomez with 46.2%, or 32,632 of the votes, and Gonzales-Torres with 25.9%, or 18,277.

The district has 755,000 residents and covers Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, El Sereno, Glassell Park and other neighborhoods. Jimmy Gomez has represented the district since 2017.

On Tuesday, CNN reported that Gomez, an Eagle Rock resident, appeared to be the latest member of Congress facing sexual misconduct allegations, possibly prompting an investigation by the House Ethics Committee.
