Voters in Inglewood and South LA went to the polls on Tuesday, some standing in line to vote in person while others came to drop off their ballot.
The LA Local sent reporters to polling stations at Denker Recreation Center and Crenshaw High School in South LA along with Rogers Park in Inglewood where they asked locals what compelled them to vote in this election.
Here’s what they told us.
Inglewood voters
LA Local social producer Daniela X. Sandoval visited Rogers Park in Inglewood on Tuesday to speak to voters about the issues that matter most, with one poll worker telling us why he was motivated to volunteer.
Derek Washington, a poll worker at Rogers Park in Inglewood, told The LA Local what motivated him to vote and help voters over the last 10 days he’s been working.
“As an ex-felon, I had to fight to get my rights back — had to petition to get a passport and the right to vote,” Washington said. “So me doing this is helping the culture, helping the neighborhood.”
South LA voters
LA Local reporter LaMonica Peters stopped by polling stations in Denker Recreation Center and Crenshaw High School in South LA on Tuesday to ask voters what motivated them to show up and cast their ballots.
One voter, Stephanie Henriquez, was seen on Election Day voting at the Denker Recreation Center in South LA with a baby in hand.
Henriquez told The LA Local today was her first time voting.
“Yeah, I usually never vote, this is my first time voting. But I only came out because my grandpa came out. He wanted me to bring him, so I voted,” Henriquez said.
LAist’s Mariana Dale also asked voters what brought them to the polls. Community organizer David Solis of Council District 9 shared his thoughts about the importance of this election to his community.
