Luz Aguilar, an aide to Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon during protests in downtown Los Angeles, according to news reports and Jurado’s office.
“My office is aware that a member of my staff has been arrested,” said Jurado in a statement sent to Boyle Heights Beat on Monday.
“The allegations are deeply concerning and I take them very seriously.”
Aguilar’s twin sister, Antonia Aguilar, 26, was also arrested on the same night at around 7 p.m., according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department inmate records.
Records show that both were released from custody on Monday shortly after 1 p.m. Bail was set at $50,000 for each. They are due to appear in court on June 30.
“While I respect the individual’s right to due process, I hold my team to the highest standards of conduct,” said Jurado, who has placed Aguilar on unpaid leave while the situation is assessed.
On Jurado’s website, Aguilar’s role is listed as a deputy for community growth and economic innovation. Their father is Pasadena City Councilmember Rick Cole, who at an anti-ICE rally on Sunday, informed demonstrators of their arrests.
“I’ve just seen pictures of my two daughters on a curb in downtown Los Angeles in handcuffs,” Cole said at the rally, according to Los Angeles Magazine.
The news comes as tensions between protesters and law enforcement intensify over federal immigration sweeps across L.A. that began last Friday.
