Dr. William “Bill” Burke, Los Angeles civic leader and founder of the LA Marathon, passed away on May 29. A dedicated and devout husband, father and grandfather, his family issued the following statement concerning his passing:

“It is with profound sadness, deep love, and immense gratitude that we share the passing of our husband and father Dr. William A. ‘Bill’ Burke, who passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by his beloved family.

“Bill lived a life of purpose, generosity, and service. He believed deeply that every person deserved the opportunity to live a healthy, fulfilling life, and he spent decades working to make that vision a reality. As Chair of the South Coast Air Quality Management District for twenty-three years, he fought tirelessly for cleaner air and healthier communities, especially for those who had too often been overlooked.

“Bill was also the founder of the Los Angeles Marathon, an event that brought people together from every corner of the region and inspired generations to challenge themselves and celebrate community. His public service extended across many roles, including on the Coastal Commission, Consul General to the Republic of Mali, President of California’s Fish and Game Commission, Commissioner of Tennis of the 1984 Olympics and Chair of the Wildlife Conservation Board.

“Yet for all of his accomplishments, Bill was most proud of his family. He was a devoted partner to Yvonne, a loving father to Christine and Autumn, and a proud grandfather who delighted in every family gathering, milestone, and moment spent together. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued, and welcome, whether they were lifelong friends or someone he had just met.

“We will remember Bill for his big heart, his unwavering optimism, his sense of humor, and his belief that one person truly could make a difference. His legacy lives on not only through the institutions he helped shape, but through the countless lives he touched along the way. We take comfort in knowing that somewhere he is out there fishing, telling a funny story and basking in the love of his friends and family.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, colleagues, and community members across Los Angeles and around the world. Details regarding a public celebration of Bill’s life will be shared in the coming days. We respectfully ask for privacy as our family gathers for a private service.

“Information regarding memorial gifts in Bill’s honor will be shared at a later date.”

With love and gratitude,

Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, Autumn Burke, Christine Burke Adams
