A judge has granted José Huízar a four-month delay in starting his upcoming prison term. He was originally scheduled to begin on April 30.
Last Monday, the former Councilmember requested a surrender date extension. The reason was not publicly disclosed, as the request was filed under seal due to containing private medical information. On Tuesday, a federal court judge granted the extension, which means Huízar will begin his prison term on August 30.
The former Councilmember was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison in a ruling issued on January 26. The once-celebrated CD14 representative was sentenced for his involvement in a pay-to-play scheme, accepting $1.5 million in bribe money and more from developers.
In addition to 13 years in jail, he was ordered during his January sentencing to pay almost $444,000 to the city in restitution and nearly $39,000 to the IRS.
