Are you a teen who lives or attends school on the Eastside? Have you ever wanted to highlight important issues or people in your neighborhood? Now’s your chance!

Boyle Heights Beat is accepting youth reporter applications for the upcoming school year. The program is an 18-week internship for high school students interested in journalism, photography and podcasting.

Founded in 2010, this local youth journalism program has offered an opportunity for neighborhood residents to provide news by and for the community.

Students involved in the program will be paired with professional journalists who will serve as mentors,  providing training in article writing, podcast production and photography.

They will also learn how to conduct interviews with politicians, community leaders and local residents, exploring topics of interest within their neighborhoods.

In addition to being featured in our print newspaper, student work produced through the program is also published in both English and Spanish online.

Interested youth must apply online on our website by Friday, May 9. The application process also includes a group interview, with final acceptances being announced by June.

Alex Medina served as a community reporter for Boyle Heights Beat from 2022 to 2024 and as an associate editor and reporter from 2024 to 2025. He was also a participant in the Boyle Heights Beat Youth Journalism Program from 2015 to 2018. He earned his degree from Hamilton College in 2022. In his free time, he enjoys reading and walking.
