Looking to be more involved in your community in 2025? Why not join your neighborhood council?
The Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council and several other councils on the Eastside are now open to new candidates interested in serving on the boards.
Neighborhood Councils are city-certified local groups responsible for working with city council members and authorities to address issues in the community.
Councils are advisory bodies with limited power. Even so, they are critical when it comes to highlighting local issues and uplifting residents’ voices to those on the city council. Boards receive annual budgets funded by taxpayer dollars, which can be used to address critical issues and support local organizations.
Neighborhood Council positions are volunteer and unpaid. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, or owns property within the area’s boundaries. Participants in some community organizations are also eligible (see guidelines here).
A total of 20 seats are open in the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council. Candidates must be at least 18 years old to qualify for a seat, which all carry a two-year term. A single seat with a one-year term is available for a youth stakeholder between the ages of 14 and 17.
The deadline to apply is Monday, February 17.
Other local boards with open applications include Arroyo Seco, Eagle Rock, Glassell Park, Cypress Park, Hermon, Highland Park, LA-32 and Lincoln Heights.
A list of candidates on the ballot will be shared on Friday, March 7, with election day set for Tuesday, May 6. Official results will be certified on Wednesday, May 21.
