Roosevelt High school students, parents and faculty are celebrating a newly installed traffic signal outside the school on E. 4th Street and S. Fickett Street in Boyle Heights.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held out in front of the school earlier this week.
Local parents have been working with Councilman Jose Huizar’s office for the last five years to try and get a traffic signal installed at the busy street, where it’s estimated more than 20,000 cars pass everyday.
“It was very risky for the kids,” Lilian Vaquero, a resident of the area, told La Opinion. “You would see them run when they went to school and cars wouldn’t even give them way. It was even more dangerous at about 3 p.m., that is when they come out, because there is more traffic.”
Councilman Huizar thanked parents for their efforts and persistence on getting the light installed. “Improvements like this allow parents to breathe a little easier knowing their children are safer,” he said.
The Councilmember also thanked the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) for installing the light, and for prioritizing other traffic signals around schools.
Proposition C dollars were used to fund the light.
