In the spirit of giving back, the family of Fernando Valenzuela hosted a Turkey Drive in Boyle Heights on Monday, Nov. 25.
The giveaway took place on 1st Street and Boyle Avenue next to Robert Vargas’ three panel mural honoring the late Dodger legend.
“Obviously, during this tough time, we felt all the love from everybody, every day,” Valenzuela’s daughter Linda told ABC7. “Everybody’s been gathering, so it’s just a little way that we can repay them and help everybody out. It’s time to give, and that’s what my dad liked to do, so we’re honoring him. It’s all about giving.”

The giveaway didn’t start until 11 a.m., but residents lined up as early as 6 a.m. in their attempt to be one of the first 500 to receive a turkey. Cars also packed 1st Street, wrapping around Boyle andPleasant avenues to claim a turkey at the giveaway’s drive-thru.
Music played as volunteers wearing “ValenzueLA 34” shirts handed the turkeys to those lined up on foot or driving by, many who came proudly donning their own Dodger merch.
