EDITOR’S UPDATE THURSDAY, OCT. 3, 2024:

The Council District 14 candidate forum originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9. Unfortunately, candidate Ysabel Jurado has tested positive for COVID-19.

More information can be found here.

Candidates for L.A. City Council District 14 Ysabel Jurado and incumbent Kevin de León will face off in Boyle Heights on Saturday in one of several debates this election season.

The debate, hosted by Boyle Heights Beat and the social justice nonprofit Proyecto Pastoral, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Dolores Mission Catholic Church.

Candidates will be questioned by The Beat’s youth reporter David Garcia and Proyecto board member Lilia Acosta about topics including housing, education, crime and safety. Father Brendan P. Busse, a member of the Dolores Mission pastoral team, will emcee the event.

Questions during the forum will be based on nearly 500 responses collected from the Election Beat survey, a form used to ask local residents what issues they want candidates to focus on this election season. Attendees will also have a chance to engage with candidates during a 20-minute Q&A session.

The debate marks the first time Jurado and De León face off in Boyle Heights. In February, The Beat held a CD14 forum for the eight candidates running for the seat in the primary, but De León and Assemblymember Miguel Santiago were not present.

The candidates have participated in at least two other debates in September with hundreds in attendance. The first debate, covered by The Beat, took place in Lincoln Heights. Last week, the El Sereno Chamber of Commerce hosted a debate between the two in El Sereno.

Translation and childcare services will be available at Saturday’s event. Light food and beverages will also be provided. Parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis with parking lost at 1618 E. 3rd St. and 370 S. Clarence St.
