In 15th-century Paris, bell-ringer Quasimodo watches the city celebrate a medieval festival as the bells of Notre Dame Cathedral ring out. Yearning to explore the world despite his deformed appearance, he ventures out. The story and characters from Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel are coming to Boyle Heights this holiday season.
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” a musical directed by Rigo Tejeda, is set to premiere Friday at Casa 0101 Theater, the neighborhood’s playhouse.
“We’ve sought to stay true to the spirit of Hugo’s story while breathing fresh life into its characters and message for our contemporary world,” said Tejeda, the founder and artistic director of TNH Productions.
“At its core, the musical is a story of the misunderstood and marginalized. In many ways, [Quasimodo’s] story resonates with the struggles we see today: the need for acceptance, the consequences of prejudice and the human desire to be loved for whom we truly are.”

The show runs for six weeks through Dec. 22. VIP tickets are also available for $70, and include priority seating, a picture on set, a free concession item and a souvenir memento.
