With only six weeks until the Nov. 6 general election, a national action led by a group of non profits is encouraging Americans across the country to register to vote by celebrating National Voter Registration Day today.

According to the website NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org, “In 2008, 6 million Americans didn’t vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn’t know how to register.” To prevent this, volunteers, celebrities, and organizations will “hit the streets” to raise awareness on voter registration deadlines and opportunities and register as many Americans as possible on Sept. 25, 2012.

Several events will be held across Los Angeles, including a press conference at California State University, Los Angeles with Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan and Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas followed by local artists.

Volunteers will also be staging a “ride along,” registering voters on Metrolink light rail lines and at Union Station.

Just yesterday, new legislation was passed to increase voter participation in California elections after Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill to allow citizens to vote on election day. Under the current law, voters must register at least 15 days before an election. However, it could take several years for the law to take effect until a statewide voting database is implemented.

My background: I was born in Mexico and raised in Boyle Heights, where I got my start in journalism by launching a community blog. Most recently, I worked at the Los Angeles Times and have spent most of my career covering local news in LA, with a focus on community-centered stories, Latino communities and mentoring emerging writers.

What I do: I lead coverage of Boyle Heights and East LA across all platforms to inform, connect and uplift our community. I spend my days listening, planning, editing and coordinating to make sure our stories reflect the community fairly, while supporting and mentoring my team of reporters and freelancers so they can grow along the way.

Why LA?: It’s home. It’s the sounds of Spanglish and other languages, the smell of tacos and kimchi, the way street art tells stories and how, even though I hate traffic, I love how the freeways can take me to the beach or the mountains on a whim.
