Thirteen stories of condominiums and a sleek, glass-walled hotel are coming to Century Boulevard in Inglewood.

The project will replace the two-story Tradewinds Hotel that currently fills the lot on the corner of Century Boulevard and Freeman Avenue, less than a 10-minute walk from the Intuit Dome and Hollywood Park.

The Inglewood City Council voted 4-0 to approve a change to the land use for the parcel on Dec. 16, clearing the way for the hotel’s construction. Councilmember Gloria Gray was not present at the meeting.

The 150-foot tall project signals a potential new direction for the neighborhood as the city works through an effort to update its land use map.

Public feedback on the project was mixed, with some voicing support for the potential jobs and bustle the hotel could bring and others concerned it will give more to tourists than to Inglewood residents.

Inglewood Mayor James Butts balked at the suggestion that the hotel won’t benefit locals.

“The people that say things like that are just misguided,” Butts said.

Butts told The LA Local he expects revenue from the hotel to flow into city infrastructure and programs.

Gregory Peck, the lead developer on the project application, did not reply to an interview request.

Construction is expected to take just over two years, according to city documents.

What’s in the new development?

The new development will include 11 for-sale condominiums and a 293-room hotel complex, according to meeting documents, as well as 915 parking spaces spread through a six-story garage and a basement parking lot.

The structure will also have a set of large digital billboards along Century Boulevard, including two displays each over 3,500 square feet and 16 double-sided billboard “fins,” according to the documents.

Labor unions are split on whether the project is a good idea

The hotel’s approval wasn’t without controversy. Labor union members and local residents filled Inglewood’s city council chamber to speak on the project last month, a rarity for Inglewood’s typically brief afternoon council meetings

Jose Delgado, an Inglewood resident and member of the Unite Here Local 11 union, said he wanted the project to add affordable housing. None of the condos were marked as affordable units in planning documents.

Delgado said the city needs more affordable housing overall.

“I’m still living in my sister’s house because I can’t afford anything else,” he said.

Unite Here Local 11, which represents hospitality workers across Southern California and Arizona, submitted several letters opposing the project in late 2024 when it was under consideration by the city planning commission. Representatives for the union did not respond to interview requests.

Several unions, though, supported the project from early on. Members of four different unions voiced support for the hotel during a planning commission meeting in December 2024.

Ernesto Pantoja, an Inglewood resident special project manager for the Laborers’ Local 300 union, known as LiUNA!, told the council last month the project will create lots of new jobs for the union’s members as well as future job opportunities for the community.

“We need this investment,” Pantoja told the council.

My background: I spent my early years in downtown Los Angeles and lived the last decade between Pico Union and University Park. Before journalism, I spent stints as an after-school tutor and a housing social worker. I’ve covered immigration, religion, housing, local government and a little bit of everything else for outlets in Los Angeles and beyond.

What I do: I keep an eye on local institutions — like city governments, police departments and school boards — and an ear to the ground for the good, the bad and the weird things going on in South LA and Inglewood. I tell you what I find out on our website, in our newsletter and on social media.

Why LA?: This place is home. I love the people, the cultures, the hills and the Pacific Ocean.
