An effort to reverse a city ban on the use and sales of fireworks was rejected by nearly 58% of voters, according to final election results from the LA County Clerk.
The Inglewood City Council voted to ban fireworks outside of permitted shows in February 2025, delighting residents who worried about noise and safety, but frustrating some local nonprofits that relied on annual firework sales as a fundraiser.
Inglewood Mayor James Butts told The LA Local the city’s ban last year came after years of resident feedback.
“We have received complaints for at least 12 years,” Butts said in May. “The council took action to outlaw them.”
Fireworks manufacturers TNT Fireworks and Phantom Fireworks were the ballot initiative’s biggest backers. TNT consultant Dennis Revell said the initiative would be an improvement on the fireworks regulations Inglewood had in place before the ban.
Roughly two dozen cities in LA County permitted the sale and use of designated “safe and sane” fireworks last Fourth of July, according to the LA County Fire Department. Firework sales are only permitted June 27 through July 6 in California.
