City officials are continuing to explore an idea that could dramatically change the look and feel of MacArthur Park: closing parts of Wilshire Boulevard to cars and reconnecting the two halves of the park to create a larger, greener public space.
On Wednesday, they invited residents to an open house at MacArthur Park Visual and Performing Arts Elementary to learn more, share feedback and fill out a community survey about the project.
Results from a previous survey showed many in the neighborhood don’t feel safe getting to the park. Residents also said they want more restrooms, better maintenance and beautiful public spaces. Most said they mainly pass through the park rather than spend time there.
At the open house, attendees covered poster boards with sticky notes calling for more security, more trash cans and a cleaner, safer park.
You can still give your feedback on these three possibilities for Wilshire Boulevard:
Option 1: Keep traffic, but limit it to two bus-only lanes, while widening sidewalks and adding trees, shade and vendor space.
Option 2: Close Wilshire to traffic either permanently or on select days for community events.
Option 3: Remove the road entirely and turn it into park space.
