While Northern California was hit with the first big atmospheric river of the season, the storm’s effects as it makes its way to Southern California are expected to be much more mellow.

Los Angeles and Ventura counties are set to receive between a tenth to a third of an inch of rain from late Friday through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service – Los Angeles (NWS-LA).

Light rain could creep in Friday night, peaking Saturday from 9 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Another chance of rain is expected later in the weekend, coming in Sunday into Monday, and again Tuesday, the NWS-LA predicts.

The rain is no cause for alarm, the organization said, but precautions should be taken by drivers who could face wet, slippery roads and an increased chance for traffic accidents.

The following are safety tips from Ready L.A. County when dealing with rain:

  • Staying informed on the weather is important.
    • NWS-LA issues weather advisories and watches when the weather forecast predicts a potential for hazardous conditions.
  • Follow all instructions from emergency responders and alert notifications.

  • Make sure your vehicle is safe to drive, and drive cautiously to avoid accidents.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded areas and never enter moving water as a pedestrian.
