Inglewood has extended its mega-event security contract with the LA County Sheriff’s Department by two years and up to $16.6 million.

Inglewood City Council approved the agreement 4-0 on Tuesday, which gives Inglewood police the option to call on extra hands from the sheriff’s department for events including the back half of the FIFA World Cup and the 2027 Super Bowl. District 4 Councilmember Dionne Faulk was absent from the meeting.

Inglewood’s current $9.3 million agreement with the sheriff’s department began last summer and runs through June 30, according to city documents.

The new agreement picks up on July 1 —  with two remaining World Cup games scheduled at SoFi Stadium —  and runs through June 30, 2028, two weeks before the opening ceremony of the 2028 Olympic Games.

Mayor James Butts told The LA Local that the city often acts as the distribution hub for mega-event security funding, meaning the city signs contracts with law enforcement agencies like the sheriff’s department for security help, then pulls in reimbursements from venues, event organizers, grants and other sources.

Inglewood should ultimately be reimbursed for the cost of its agreement with the sheriff’s department as well, city staff wrote in a report. The report said the new agreement is a product of “increased operational demands” from events visiting the city in the next two years.

The sheriff’s department can pitch in with everything from personnel to logistical support for major events, according to city documents.

My background: I spent my early years in downtown Los Angeles and lived the last decade between Pico Union and University Park. Before journalism, I spent stints as an after-school tutor and a housing social worker. I’ve covered immigration, religion, housing, local government and a little bit of everything else for outlets in Los Angeles and beyond.

What I do: I keep an eye on local institutions — like city governments, police departments and school boards — and an ear to the ground for the good, the bad and the weird things going on in South LA and Inglewood. I tell you what I find out on our website, in our newsletter and on social media.

Why LA?: This place is home. I love the people, the cultures, the hills and the Pacific Ocean.
