Los Angeles City Council District 9 officials recently announced they’re offering a total of $3 million in grants for nonprofit, faith-based or community organizations.
The grants are part of the Council District 9 Community Grant Program, and range from $5,000 to $100,000, according to the grant application on the CD9 website.
This is the second round of funding for the program. Curren D. Price Jr., the outgoing District 9 council member, first established the program in 2021 as an effort to reinvest funds previously allocated for the LA Police Department. In 2022, the grant program awarded $4 million to nearly 100 local organizations, Price said in a statement.
The nonprofit Conga Kids received a $50,000 grant during the 2022 funding period and told The LA Local the funding helped to expand arts access for youth in historically underserved communities.
“Through this grant, our Residency Programs served twenty-nine 4th-grade classrooms and forty-four 5th-grade classrooms within the 9th District,” Barbara Garcia Vera, Conga Kids executive director, wrote in an email. “We engaged more than 2,190 students through dance education rooted in cultural exploration, social-emotional learning, and movement.”
