Junior Dylan Brown competes in sailing, rugby and golf at View Park High School. Brown began learning how to compete in rugby and golf before he became a high school student.
Brown has been playing rugby since his fifth-grade year; he started golf in the seventh grade. He mentioned how he sees ICEF rugby head coach Stuart Krohn as a father figure.
“He’s always pushing me to improve as a man, outside of rugby,” Brown said. “He supported me through some rough moments, some rough patches and he’s always there for me.”
Competing in rugby on the high school level was difficult for Brown during his freshman year. His passion for the sport helped him persevere.
“I was dedicated and I wanted to improve. I became a great player,” Brown said. “Our second game of the season, I remember like it was yesterday, I got the ball, he passed me the ball, I went through the gap and I came addicted to the feeling of running and scoring.”
Brown competed in the Urban Rugby Championship in Dallas, Texas; he learned to monitor his words when talking to opponents.
“I’ve said a lot of things that was on my mind that didn’t need to be said,” Brown said. “I’m trying to stray away from it because as a leader, I want to be a role model for my teammates.”
Golf was a relaxing getaway before rugby season, according to Brown. He learned the importance of having a good swinging technique.
“Hitting it as hard as you can isn’t always the best option,” Brown said. “I just have to swing with proper technique and get good contact and the ball will go flying.”
Sailing was a sport that Brown started in 10th grade, it gave him skills in patience that help him in rugby.
For Brown, being a student athlete requires balance and proper scheduling.
“Just keep moving forward, managing your studies and not only that, just managing your body,” he said. “You have to have days dedicated to work and then your practice days.”
His favorite class is AP English Language, Brown enjoys the energy from his teacher.
“He’s the most funny teacher and I love his work, I’m passionate about it,” Brown said. “I enjoy learning new things.”
Brown is a member of ASB at View Park as the commissioner of athletics. He aspires to make athletes feel appreciated.
“One of the main things is having pep rallies and making sure there’s student engagement during the pep rally,” he said. “We give them these little clappers and the little pom poms and they love it. They go wild with it.”
Brown aspires to be an aerospace engineer. He also wants to play rugby on the college level.
“I love knowing how things work,” Brown said. “I genuinely want to challenge myself because I know and I’ve seen my hard work pay off.”
