Santa Ana, California, native Zabien Brown has been a key contributor to the University of Alabama defense. Last season, he amassed 26 solo tackles, two interceptions and six pass deflections.

Brown goes into the 2026 season with a goal of improving the team. Since his freshman season, Brown has been a starter for the Crimson Tide football team.

“It means the most that I have my coach’s trust and confidence in me,” Brown said. “It allows me to play harder, play faster knowing that people got my back.”

Last season, he was one of several players on the Alabama roster who played for Mater Dei High School.

“It brings a sense of home,” Brown said about having Mater Dei alums for teammates. “Being able to relate to certain guys on a deeper level. Being across the country, having people to lean on, it goes a long way.”

Adapting to life in Alabama was a challenge for Brown, but he learned to persevere.

“It took a lot of adjustment,” Brown said. “It played a part on your mind, but I feel like it’s something I had to deal with.”

Playing for Mater Dei taught Brown the importance of poise, pride and courage. He abides by those attributes as a college student.

“It’s something that I take seriously,” he said.

A proud moment for Brown was when he made an interception against the Tennessee Volunteers last season. He made a 99-yard return for a touchdown with that pick. Being a natural ballplayer helps Brown seek out interceptions.  He noted how his family attended that game.

“We’re extremely reactive,” Brown said about his fellow defensive backs. “I feel like you can anticipate something and not trust it.”

Alabama provides resources and a support system that help Brown be a successful student athlete.

“It’s really special, I’m blessed,” Brown said. “They put me on track to graduate early, I feel like being able to get your degree, that’s something that’s really important.”

Brown is majoring in business management. He has a strong relationship with his advisers, which helps him with his studies.
