Washington Prep senior Madison Greene is a multi-sport student athlete and leader on campus. She helped the girls’ basketball team win a Division III City Section Championship.

“It’s a good feeling because you get to leave with something big,” Greene said. “Since this would be my third time going to the championship game, but the first win, it meant that much more.”

Greene also competed in flag football, track and field, and golf. Running in track helps her condition for other sports. Greene enjoyed playing flag football in middle school. She chose golf to try something new during her senior year.

Greene had several friends and family members who played basketball. She is the team captain of the girls’ basketball and flag football teams this season.

The leadership skills that Greene learned this season helped the Generals manage their emotions during games. She noted how issues within the team led to losses last season.

“Keeping everybody together and calm and talking out our problems,” Greene said. “If someone was getting angry during the game, I would tell them ‘calm down,’ ‘don’t argue with the refs’ and ‘let’s just finish the game.’”

Washington Prep has a 14-3 overall record. In two of those losses, Greene learned how to master the mental aspects of the game.

“Despite the atmosphere, the bigger crowds and the more intimidating teams, I would need to stay focused and not let my mind get in the way of me playing,” Greene said. “Stay out of my head.”

For Greene, to be a student athlete means to understand time management.

“I like it, but then it’s also difficult at the same time … especially being a senior because they try to do a heavier workload,” Greene said.  “I’ve been able to manage with it but keeping up with the class work and also having to keep up with the plays that we got to learn in practice … I have to make extra time for schoolwork.”

Outside of academics and athletics, Greene is the ASB senior vice president. She helped plan and set up events.

“It opened my eyes to what it’s really like to plan things,” Greene said. “To go out and have to find where to get the things from, the caterers and the place. That’s a whole different thing.”
