The Boyle Heights Beat, an L.A. Local News Initiative newsroom, is looking for a full-time reporter to help cover our neighborhood. We’re looking for someone who understands what makes the Eastside of L.A. special and has a passion for telling its stories.

In this job, you’ll report on stories that matter deeply to our neighbors — from the impact of ICE raids and concerns over gentrification to the latest restaurant opening that brings the community together. You’ll produce content that helps residents navigate local government and connects them to their neighbors, covering everything from neighborhood council meetings to celebrations that strengthen our community bonds.

This isn’t desk reporting—you’ll be out there where the conversations are happening. You need to be in constant conversation with the people who live and work in Boyle Heights, becoming a familiar face at community events, local meetings, and at local coffee shops — wherever all the neighborhood news gets shared first.

We also aim to be accessible. You will write articles for our website and newsletter, but you will also post on social media, and experiment with new formats.

Your co-workers are storytellers who know the best places to eat and aren’t afraid to ask tough questions of our elected officials. We’re curious, we’re hungry (literally and figuratively), and we believe great journalism happens when you actually know your neighbors. We value teamwork, curiosity and the ability to tell a good story.

My background: I was born in Mexico and raised in Boyle Heights, where I got my start in journalism by launching a community blog. Most recently, I worked at the Los Angeles Times and have spent most of my career covering local news in LA, with a focus on community-centered stories, Latino communities and mentoring emerging writers.

What I do: I lead coverage of Boyle Heights and East LA across all platforms to inform, connect and uplift our community. I spend my days listening, planning, editing and coordinating to make sure our stories reflect the community fairly, while supporting and mentoring my team of reporters and freelancers so they can grow along the way.

Why LA?: It’s home. It’s the sounds of Spanglish and other languages, the smell of tacos and kimchi, the way street art tells stories and how, even though I hate traffic, I love how the freeways can take me to the beach or the mountains on a whim.

The best way to contact me: My email is jessica.perez@boyleheightsbeat.org.
