Hola Boyle Heights! Your community reporter, Alex Medina, is here to share some happenings in and around the neighborhood to get you out and about.

One special thing about The Beat is our print edition, a bilingual community news resource produced by our team of youth reporters. As our slogan goes, it really is news by and for the community. I remember what it was like holding a newspaper with one of my stories for the first time when I was 15. It was something truly special that made me feel like I was making a difference, no matter how small.

The latest edition of the Boyle Heights Beat newspaper has hit the streets. It features stories by our most recent team of our youth reporters, some of which are starting college in a few weeks, and others who will continue reporting for The Beat. If you want to get yourself a copy, here are some spots where you can find them:

Libraries:

Nonprofits

High schools

There’s also local restaurants and shops you might spot us at too. You can stop by our office (2026 E. 1st Street) to chat with us and get a copy of the paper too. Make sure to keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more on the latest neighborhood news!

For folks who want to learn more about the name change process, The Wall Las Memorias (2020 E. 1st Street) has you covered. The organization is hosting a clinic to walk you through the process of filing for a legal name change. You’ll learn about what information you’ll need to fill out the necessary documents. The free event starts at 6 p.m. and you can register to attend online.

It’s the second Friday of the month, which means it’s time for CaminArte. Espacio 1839 (1839 E. 1st Street) will host a group art show at 6 p.m. featuring 25 artists focused on the healing and energizing power of community gathering. Outside of the shop, you’ll find an artisanal marketplace open until 10 p.m.

É Arenas is coming to The Paramount (2708 E. Cesar E. Chavez) alongside Los So-Lows and DJ Cosecha. You can grab a $25 ticket for the show online. Doors are set to open at 8 p.m.

Bass Heist and Red House Productions are bringing “Earthquake Weather” to Don Quixote (2811 E. Olympic Boulevard). This immersive riddim/dubstep show will feature bands Bandlez, Megalodon, Ectodubs, Kozik Dubz, Bina and Cattle Prod. The show runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and you can grab a ticket for $15-40 online

Both these Eastside venues have more shows this weekend and further out, so make sure to check out their websites for more coming soon: (The Paramount) (Don Quixote)

The Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory (2708 E. Cesar E. Chavez Avenue) is hosting a back-to-school giveaway from 10 to noon. A limited supply of backpacks will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Over at Hollenbeck Park (415 S. St. Louis Street), Boyle Heights photographer Star Montana will be hosting a two-day photo event to “capture your magic and make memories.” Attendees will receive one free 8 ½ x 11 printed portrait per session and a digital copy as well. You can register for your free portrait session here

For folks looking for a weekend night market, Esquina Bike Shop (2229 Whittier Boulevard) has you covered with the marketplace Teocalli. The event features various local merch and food vendors (and even stick and poke tattoos) from 6 to 9 p.m. every second Saturday of the month. With music and an open mic as well, it’s a fun event to check out if you’re in the neighborhood.

La Plaza de Cultura y Artes (501 N. Main Street) is hosting the LOMA Film Festival, a celebration of the Latino diaspora’s impact on and off screen. The event runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will feature various cultural films as well as a Q&A with filmmakers following the various showings. You can see the full program here and RSVP for the free event online

As always, let us know what you think of the newsletter and send us events to include in future editions. Have an amazing weekend!

¡Hasta luego Boyle Heights, nos vemos en la calle!
