José Huizar granted another delay to begin prison sentence

Originally scheduled to surrender to prison by the end of August, José Huizar, your former councilmember, now has an extra month.  On Aug. 29, a judge granted Huizar an extension. He now has until Oct. 7 to start his 13-year prison term – unless he appeals again. Huizar pleaded guilty to racketeering and tax evasion charges back in 2023. You can read more here

The heartbeat of Boyle Heights: Photo essay celebrates workers

Workers are the backbone of any community, and that’s no different in a neighborhood like Boyle Heights. On Monday’s Labor Day holiday, we shared a portrait series in collaboration with Las Fotos Project highlighting some of the hardworking people who make our community thrive. Tougher protest rules incite mixed feelings at Cal State L.A. 

The end of spring semester was a hectic time for many college campuses across the nation as student protests and pro-Palestinian encampments made headlines. We covered the student encampment at Cal State L.A. when it started in May and when it was cleared in June . New rules implemented by the CSU system now prohibit encampments and overnight demonstrations, restrict the use of facemasks and list various additional illegal activities to deter student protesters. Thursday, Sept. 5

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer for LAUSD Region East? The district is offering a workshop at Wadsworth Ave. Elementary School from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to teach you all about the process. There will be a free tuberculosis questionnaire screening available on-site to help you accelerate your application, and those who come with a child will get a free children’s book. 

Friday, Sept. 6

There’s quite a lot going on at The Wellness Center this Friday, all geared toward taking care of your physical and mental health. 

You can RSVP to attend a weekly yoga class that runs from 9 to 10:15 a.m. led by Ashwin Clinic-College of Yoga & Vedic Sciences. Those looking to learn about techniques and strategies on how to cope with stress can join a class from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. You can RSVP for either by calling (213) 784-9191. 

Nuestra Casa is also coming to The Wellness Center to provide a grief support group for those looking for guidance after experiencing the death of a loved one. The meeting is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and you can register by calling (310) 231-3196. 

Saturday, Sept. 7

Over at the El Pueblo Historical Monument, there will be a chalk art festival running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take a leisurely stroll through the heart of the city’s birthplace and enjoy creative chalk art crafted by various local artists. There will be lots to do, so stop on by if you’re in the area.

The Consulate General of Mexico in L.A. and CHIRLA are hosting a celebration highlighting the contributions of DACA recipients for the city. You can stop by the Consulate at 2:30 p.m. for the event, where you’ll also be able to participate in an open mic and the creation of the location’s “DestACAno” mural.

It’s time for this year’s East Side Print Fair happening from noon to 6 p.m. at the South Gate Museum and Art Gallery. There will be art workshops, food and drink vendors and of course, emerging printmakers from East L.A. and surrounding communities to support. You can RSVP to attend the free event online

Boyle Heights History Studios is hosting a tour and history lesson on the most haunted spots in the community. You’ll get to take an evening stroll led by local historian and community organizer Shmuel Gonzales to learn the spooky history behind places like the Sanatorium and Orphans Home, as well as Linda Vista Hospital. You can grab a $30 ticket for the tour, which starts at 6 p.m., outside of Hollenbeck Park Community Center. 

The Paramount is hosting The Paranoias band alongside musician Profesor Galactico for a packed night of Latin ska, Indie rock and punk rock music. Free admission is available online for those 21 and up, with tickets ranging from $15-20 for those under 21. Doors open at 7 p.m. 

Sunday, Sept. 8

Community Nature Connection and Northeast Trees are hosting a Southern California Black Walnut Collection & Dye Workshop. You’ll learn the process of cleaning and processing the walnuts, which you’ll get to use to dye bandanas. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. over at Ascot Hills in El Sereno. Spots are limited, so RSVP online before spaces are filled. 

Monday, Sept. 9

The WOC Sister Collective is coming to Eastside Cafe in El Sereno for a women’s circle centered on movement, meditation and reflection. The theme for this month’s gathering is all about the upcoming fall equinox, a time for growth and celebration of life. Attendees are encouraged to bring a journal, pen, and a yoga mat or blanket. The event runs from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. and with a $5 to $20 recommended donation, although none will be turned away for lack of funds.
