As many of you know, Boyle Heights Beat launched 15 years ago with the mission to give our community a voice and train the next generation of journalists to tell our own stories, in our own words.

Since then, we’ve seen just how powerful local, community-rooted journalism can be. And we’ve seen how much more is needed, not just here in Boyle Heights, but across Los Angeles.

That’s why we’re excited to share some big news: Kristen Muller has been named the Executive Editor of the L.A. Local News Initiative — the nonprofit organization that supports and powers our newsroom. The initiative is building a network of local newsrooms across Los Angeles, and we’re proud to be the first, and the model for the community-first approach we will take in every neighborhood we serve. Together, we’re working to expand access to local reporting in more communities throughout L.A.

Kristen brings decades of experience in public service journalism, a deep understanding of our city, and a clear commitment to collaboration. She’s been a champion of community-driven reporting throughout her career, and we’re thrilled to welcome her aboard.

We’ll continue to share updates on this growing network of local journalism, and we’re grateful — as always — to our readers, supporters, and partners who make this work possible. You can find our current and upcoming openings at the L.A. Local News Initiative jobs page.

My background: I was born in Mexico and raised in Boyle Heights, where I got my start in journalism by launching a community blog. Most recently, I worked at the Los Angeles Times and have spent most of my career covering local news in LA, with a focus on community-centered stories, Latino communities and mentoring emerging writers.

What I do: I lead coverage of Boyle Heights and East LA across all platforms to inform, connect and uplift our community. I spend my days listening, planning, editing and coordinating to make sure our stories reflect the community fairly, while supporting and mentoring my team of reporters and freelancers so they can grow along the way.

Why LA?: It’s home. It’s the sounds of Spanglish and other languages, the smell of tacos and kimchi, the way street art tells stories and how, even though I hate traffic, I love how the freeways can take me to the beach or the mountains on a whim.

The best way to contact me: My email is jessica.perez@boyleheightsbeat.org.
