Big changes are coming to L.A. County’s historic General Hospital campus and the public will soon have a chance to weigh in.

Mostly shuttered for decades, the former Boyle Heights Art Deco building and surrounding area are set to be transformed into a hub for housing, retail and medical offices. The project is entering its next phase of planning and design, and developers are asking the community to help shape what comes next.

Primestor Developments, one of the developers on the revitalization project, is hosting an in-person and virtual community meeting on Saturday to present the project’s master plan and invite public feedback.

Participants will be able to share their input on what the community needs and what priorities should shape the vision of the planned “Health Village.”

What’s in the plan?

The master plan presentation will detail the proposed changes coming to the space, including:

  • Community-serving retail space
  • Health supportive services
  • Affordable and market-rate housing

The development allows for more than 800 units of housing, with roughly one-third designated as affordable. The plan also includes hundreds of mental health treatment beds.
The project is being led by Centennial Partners, in partnership with L.A. County, The Wellness Center and the Health Innovation Community Partnership.

Catch me up – what’s the latest?

Approved in 2023, the transformation of the old General Hospital and the 25-acre area surrounding it is expected to cost around $1 billion. The county has already dedicated $134 million from local, state and federal funding sources to the project’s seismic retrofitting and cleanup work, according to LAist.

In July, the county submitted an application to list the building on the National Register of Historic Places, which would assist with the cost of the project if approved.

“Together, we are creating a community space that prioritizes affordable housing, health and wellness services, open green space, and more,” County Supervisor Hilda Solis wrote on Instagram following the July vote to move the project into its technical planning phase.  “The iconic General Hospital has long been a symbol of healing, and through this effort, it will continue to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity.

When can you weigh in?

The community meeting takes place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 27. Spanish interpretation will be available.
