Community members can testify this Saturday, Dec. 14 at Cal State University, Los Angeles when the The South Coast Air Quality Management District holds a hearing to consider an Order of Abatement against Exide Technologies.

SCAQMD’s petition alleges Exide, a lead-acid battery recycling plant in the City of Vernon, is violating its permit conditions based on its failure to fully capture and control arsenic emissions.

The Hearing Board, an independent administrative law panel made up of an engineer, an attorney, a medical doctor, and two public members, will hear testimony from members of the public between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A schedule of additional hearing dates will be announced. After hearing evidence from both sides, members of the hearing board will make a decision.

If the Order of Abatement is approved, Exide would be required to shut down all of its lead-smelting operations until its air pollution control panels are improved.

The SCAQMD is providing free bus service to and from Cal State Los Angeles from various locations including Hollenbeck Middle School and Maravilla Community Center in East Los Angeles each hour, beginning at 8 a.m. For a complete list and more information, contact: the Clerk of the Board at 909-396-2500, or email at clerkoftheboard@aqmd.gov.
