¡Hola Boyle Heights! It’s Alex back to share the latest happening in our neighborhood.
News por y para la comunidad

Workers, labor unions and community organizations hit the streets this week for May Day demonstrations in honor of International Workers’ Day.
In downtown L.A., the theme was “One Struggle, One Fight – Workers United!” Over in Boyle Heights, Centro CSO hosted its own May Day event at Mariachi Plaza.
Did you attend a rally? Tell us why and send us your photos to feature in our next newsletter!
Speaking of people coming together, when Southern California was engulfed in a firestorm earlier this year, community members stepped up however they could. Many showed up to drop off masks, hygiene products – and a whole lot of clothing!
There was so much that some mutual aid groups and nonprofits even began having to turn down donations. Did all the clothing end up with those affected by the wildfires? Not quite. Our partners at LAist have the big picture.
Other stories you should know about:
- A federal court has issued a preliminary injunction forbidding the Border Patrol from conducting warrantless immigration stops throughout a wide swath of California.
- Undeterred by the weekend rain, community members and local organizations recently gathered at Hollenbeck Park for a cleanup effort that spurred conversations about the city’s sanitation, infrastructure and budget priorities.
- As Mayor Karen Bass’ proposed budget calls for cuts to youth and senior programs, Boyle Heights community members hopped on a “budget bus” to share their hopes and frustrations at a public hearing.
Now, onto this weekend’s lineup of events. From late-night shows to community gatherings, I’m sure there’s something for you to get out and about in the neighborhood!
