We’ve got a few happenings on the Eastside lined up for you this weekend, including some back-to-school events, a rock show in the Arts District and a luchador throwdown in Boyle Heights. Collage making more your speed? Hit up the Vincent Price Art Museum at ELAC to get your craft on with the Kali Arte Collective. 

And for some quality family fun, visit some Eastside library branches starting today for a movie and some craft workshops. 

Here’s what’s going down across the Eastside this weekend. 

Happenings in the Heights:


Thursday, August 21

  • Movie night at Malabar Branch Library: Join the community for a free screening of Dogman at the Malabar Branch Library. Will the villainous Petey the Cat be stopped from creating an evil kitten? Find out at 4 p.m. at 2801 Wabash Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90033. 
  • Crafts at Lincoln Heights Branch Library: Visit the library in Lincoln Heights to make and customize back-to-school pencil bags. Supplies will be provided; first-come, first-served starting at 4 p.m. at 2530 Workman St, Los Angeles, CA 90031.
  • Back to Legacy Night: Drop by Legacy LA in Ramona Gardens for a free backpack and school supply giveaway starting at 4 p.m. Come hungry because food and drinks will be provided. 1350 San Pablo St, Los Angeles, CA 90033.

Friday, August 22

  • Album release party: Make your way across the 1st Street bridge to catch Punk Crush’s album release show at the Moroccan Lounge for their record Feral with support from Blonde Goth. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at 901 1st St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Saturday, August 23

  • Fresh Perspectives: Join the Raices con Voz community for a summer mixer in Chinatown. Make connections, sip on agua frescas and share perspectives that uplift your community. RSVP required. 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Address will be shared two days before the event. 
  • Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture: Share space with the Kali Arte Collective for a collage workshop with the Eastside artists. This event is free and welcome to all. 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez, Monterey Park, CA 91754.

Sunday, August 24 

  • East Los Lucha: Get ready to rumble and dance the night away at Don Quixote for the third iteration of the Lucha Block Party. 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 2811 E. Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90023.

Andrew Lopez is a Los Angeles native with roots across the Eastside. He studied at San Francisco State University and later earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. He returned to Los Angeles from the Bay Area to report for Boyle Heights Beat from 2023 to 2025 through UC Berkeley’s California Local News Fellowship. When he is not reporting, Lopez mentors youth journalists through The LA Local’s youth journalism program. He enjoys practicing photojournalism and covering the intersections of culture, history and local government in Eastside communities.
