A total of 12 candidates registered to run for the seat, and they include community organizers, social workers, educators and a college student, according to election documents.

Here is who filed paperwork to run for the District 9 seat:

  • Estuardo Mazariegos
  • Jo Uraizee
  • Adriana Cabrera
  • Jorge Nuño
  • Jose Ugarte
  • Martha Sánchez
  • Elmer Roldan
  • Michelle Washington
  • Jorge Hernandez Rosas
  • Chris Martin
  • Enrique Hernandez-Garcia
  • Nathan Juarez

District 9 covers Historic South Central, Exposition Park and a sliver of downtown Los Angeles. It is home to many of the city’s core Olympic venues for 2028, including the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, BMO Stadium, Crypto.com Arena and the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The only busier contest in June is the mayoral election, where more than three dozen candidates filed papers to challenge incumbent Karen Bass.

Saturday at noon was the deadline for candidates to register campaigns with the LA City Clerk. Candidates still need to gather signatures on nominating petitions in order to officially get on the ballot.

My background: I spent my early years in downtown Los Angeles and lived the last decade between Pico Union and University Park. Before journalism, I spent stints as an after-school tutor and a housing social worker. I’ve covered immigration, religion, housing, local government and a little bit of everything else for outlets in Los Angeles and beyond.

What I do: I keep an eye on local institutions — like city governments, police departments and school boards — and an ear to the ground for the good, the bad and the weird things going on in South LA and Inglewood. I tell you what I find out on our website, in our newsletter and on social media.

Why LA?: This place is home. I love the people, the cultures, the hills and the Pacific Ocean.
